AAA-Fund Expresses Concern Over Uneven Press Coverage

Washington D.C. — The Asian American Action Fund expressed concern over how the media has covered the criminal investigations of former Romney Finance Co-Chair Alan Fabian and former Democratic donor Norman Hsu.

Fabian, a prolific fundraiser for President George W. Bush and GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was recently indicted for a $32 million fraud scheme. The charges against Fabian include money laundering, perjury, and obstruction of justice. Hsu, who has a prior conviction for grand theft, is being investigated for potentially improper fundraising and business practices. Both Fabian and Hsu are American citizens.

"We condemn all violations of the law, regardless of race, ethnicity, or party affiliation," said AAA-Fund Executive Director Gautam Dutta. "We urge the authorities to vigorously investigate the allegations against Mr. Fabian and Mr. Hsu," Dutta added.

Like Bush and Romney's Fabian, former top officials from other GOP Presidential campaigns currently face serious criminal charges. South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, formerly with Rudy Giuliani, has been indicted for cocaine trafficking. Florida Rep. Bob Allen, formerly with John McCain, was recently arrested for solicitation of prostitution.

Curiously, despite the severity of their alleged criminal conduct, press coverage has not focused on Fabian, Ravenel, or Allen. In contrast, Hsu's story has garnered national, front-page attention — raising concerns about how his case has been covered.

"Why has Mr. Hsu generated headlines, but not Mr. Fabian, Mr. Ravenel, or Mr. Allen? Is it because Fabian, Ravenel, and Allen are Republicans? Or is there racial or ethnic bias in these headlines?" Dutta asked.

"We urge the media to report about all four men in a responsible, balanced manner," Dutta said.

The AAA-Fund will continue to monitor this matter.

The AAA-Fund is a national Democratic political organization whose goal is to increase the voice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in local, state and federal government, by encouraging AAPIs to volunteer on campaigns, raise money for candidates, and run for political office.
