WASHINGTON, D.C. / September 29, 2006 - The Asian American Action Fund (AAA-Fund) voted unanimously to endorse Naisy Dolar, a leading voice for Asian Americans in the City of Chicago, for 50th ward alderman.
"Naisy's victory would be historic for Chicago and the Asian American community," said Erika L. Moritsugu, executive director of the AAA-Fund. "She has dedicated much of her professional and personal life to serving the diverse population in Chicago. She has key alliances with the public and private sectors and can best serve the citizens of the 50th ward, of which 23% are Asian Pacific American. We wholeheartedly endorse this charismatic candidate."
Since 2000, Dolar has served as Director of the Asian Advisory Council for the City of Chicago's Commission on Human Relations, launched new initiatives such as the City Services Awareness Survey for the Asian American community to increase awareness of city resources, established the first Asian American Speakers Bureau for the city of Chicago, and implemented an annual mayoral award, FoundAsian, to recognize key contributions by Asian Americans for the city.
"Naisy is special for three reasons," said Paul Tiao, AAA-Fund co-founder and advisor. "First, her commitment to diversity is deep and strong. Second-and this is something we often forget: Democracy is about civic participation, and her race embodies that ideal. Third, if elected, she would be the first Asian American ever to serve as alderman in the city of Chicago."
Dolar (naisydolar.com) faces long-time incumbent Bernard Stone in a four-way primary. She announced her campaign officially on September 28. If no one receives a majority on February 27, 2007, the top two finishers will advance to an April 17, 2007 runoff election.
"I am honored to accept the endorsement of the AAA-Fund," said Dolar. "This election represents an exciting new political step forward for the Asian American community in Chicago, and I hope my election inspires others to someday run as well. I look forward to the great new opportunities this will bring to the community and am so pleased to have the support of the AAA-Fund."
The AAA-Fund (www.aaa-fund.org) is a national Democratic political organization whose goal is to increase the voice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in local, state and federal government, by encouraging APAs to volunteer on campaigns, raise money for candidates, and run for political office.
