Jeff Merkley     Official website  |   www.jeffmerkley.com
Elected to the U.S. Senate From Oregon

 Jeff Merkley
Jeff Merkley
Senator Jeff Merkley was elected to his first term in the US Senate in November 2008. Born in the small town of Myrtle Creek, the son of a sawmill worker, he spent his early years in Roseburg, where the children of loggers and mill workers learned the value of honest work, good schools, and strong families. Jeff worked hard, earned scholarships and became the first in his family to go to college. He went on to serve as a national security analyst, first for the Pentagon and then for Congress. After returning to Oregon with his wife Mary, Senator Merkley led Habitat for Humanity and worked with low-income families to rebuild neighborhoods and purchase their first home.

A fighter for change, Senator Merkley became tired of gridlock in government and sought to end the bickering. Nearly two years ago, Jeff led a band of new leaders to take control of the Oregon House and end the gridlock in state government. As the first Democratic speaker in sixteen years, Senator Merkley brought Democrats, Republicans and citizens together to make real progress addressing Oregon's challenges. The Oregonian called Senator Merkley's session as Speaker, "Oregon's most productive in a generation."

As Speaker, Senator Merkley helped lead the fight against special interests to make health care more affordable, clamp down on pay day loan scams, pass landmark environmental legislation, and create thousands of family-wage jobs in Oregon. Working together, Oregonians achieved results — restoring fiscal responsibility by creating the state's first "rainy day fund," cutting taxes for working people, and passing sweeping ethics reform to clean up government.

Representative Gary Peters is a fifth-generation Oakland County native, a former Lieutenant Commander in the Navy Reserve, and an accomplished businessman who served as Vice President for two major investment firms. Twice elected from Oakland County to serve in the Michigan Senate, Representative Peters worked to cut taxes for middle class families, and he earned a strong reputation for fiscal responsibility and effective, bipartisan leadership.

In the Michigan Senate, Representative Peters ran his office so efficiently, that he was able to return the equivalent of a full-year's operating budget back to the state - saving the taxpayers money. He was elected by his colleagues to serve as the Chairman of the Senate Democratic caucus, and went on to build a strong record of bipartisan leadership, having more of his bills signed into law than any other Democratic Senator.

After leaving the Senate, Representative Peters took the reins of the Michigan Lottery where he generated record amounts of funding to help public schools across Michigan. Under Representative Peter's leadership, the Lottery experienced a dramatic turnaround, ending a four-year slump in revenues, increasing sales by over $600 million per year, and increasing revenues for public schools.
