Each month, we will feature one of our Sponsors, and highlight why they are supporting the AAA-Fund. Our Featured Sponsor this month is Willard Tom, a partner in the Antitrust Practice Group of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in Washington, D.C.
Q: Will, why are you a major donor to the AAA-Fund?
A: I had the good fortune to serve as a political appointee at the Department of Justice during the Clinton Administration, and subsequently in policy and management posts at the Federal Trade Commission. I think public service is a noble calling that should be open to all persons of talent and dedication. An organization like the AAA-Fund gives Asian Pacific Americans who would like to serve their community, state, or nation through elected office the ability to compete on a more level playing field with members of more established groups.
Q: Is there one particular aspect of our work that is important to you?
A: The issues focused on by the AAA-Fund, such as hate crimes, the glass ceiling, immigration, and racial profiling, are important ones. They should be of concern not only to Asian Pacific Americans or to minorities generally, but to all Americans. More broadly, I see the fund as providing Asian Pacific Americans an opportunity to serve their country that they might not have otherwise.
Q: Any thoughts you'd like to share with other potential sponsors?
A: Money alone will not buy political empowerment, but without financial resources, we will not have an equal opportunity even to have our voices heard. I hope that other APAs will support the AAA-Fund as well as their endorsed candidates by making donations in whatever amount they can afford.
